Service Tips from Ed Jensen

Washer Overfilling

If your washing machine has water running out the drain or to the drain through the overflow, first make sure it is water, not suds. If a washer is underloaded it may cause excess suds and the suds may come out the overflow as if it were overfilling.

If a machine is overfilling not caused by suds, this may be caused by the drain valve not opening, a bad water valve staying open, a partially plugged pressure tubing line, loose-fitting to pressure switch, or bad pressure switch. The pressure tube connects to washer shell and leads to the pressure switch. The air in the pressure tube tells the pressure switch what the water level is in order to turn on or off. If there is water coming out the drain when the machine is off, you have a bad water valve that is not closing. Replace or rebuild it.

Inspect the pressure tubing—it may have a loose fitting at the shell or at the pressure switch, it may be kinked, it may have a hole in it or it may be clogged. Any of these will cause a bad reading. Your machine may have either a pressure switch "hockey puck" or a small pressure transducer screwed or soldered on the processor board.
