How and why we bolt and grout a hardmount washer:

Milnor and Huebsch hardmount washers need to be securely bolted to a concrete floor to handle the spinning forces. Grout expands as it dries and makes sure there are no gaps between the floor and the washer that could cause vibration and loosen bolts. No floor is level; grouting makes up for inconsistencies in the floor. The grout also raises the washer above the floor so any standing water does not cause rusting to the washer frame.

When installing a Milnor washer, we need 5/8-inch x 6-inch wedge anchors, 2 5-foot 2x4’s and fast-drying grout. Tools include hammer drill with 5/8-inch bit, a mixing drill, a level, a large hammer, a 11/16 socket ½-inch drive, and a 2-inch wide trowel.

The floor for the raised concrete base must be at least 12 inches thick and tied into or connected to the existing floor with rebar. It cannot be isolated! It cannot be a pad poured on a pad! Set the washer up on the 2x4’s with the 2x4 next to the inside of the pads of the washer. Level the washer from side to side by putting washers on the 2x4’s where the machine is making contact. Then we drill the anchor holes about 12 inches deep and vacuum out the holes. We take anchors, washer, and lock washer and just put the nut on until the threads are at the top of the anchor. Next, this is very important, we spread grease on the threads of the anchor to keep grout from adhering to the threads. Then one at a time, we put anchors in the holes and pound them down until the washer makes contact with the machine. We mix grout in a 5-gallon bucket - make it thick so it won’t run. Fill the whole washer flange pad with grout from outside to the 2x4’s and from front to rear. Trowel and smooth on the exposed grout. Let it set overnight, then we remove the 2x4’s and tighten down the anchors. After about 2 weeks please check anchors again to see if any of them came loose and need to be tightened.
